YA readers — and honestly, most modern readers — don’t want stories that drag, explain themselves to death, or make them wait 200 pages to feel something. They want momentum. Emotional clarity. Characters who feel real now, not eventually. The good news? You don’t have to write YA to learn from YA craft.
Gen Z writers not afraid of AI. We’re afraid of judgment. We’re afraid of being called “cheaters” or “lazy” or “not real writers” because we use modern tools in a modern world. So, let’s have an honest conversation — one that actually reflects what young writers are thinking, not what adults assume we’re thinking.
Teen motivation is basically a chaotic Venn diagram of FOMO, vibes, and whether or not there are snacks. (Just in case it’s been that long since you spoke to a teen, FOMO stands for Fear Of Missing Out).
So if you want teen readers to actually show up (physically or digitally), here’s the truth — no sugarcoating, no corporate-lingo energy and no “engagement strategies” written by someone who hasn’t spoken to a teenager since 2003.
YA stories live on emotion and honesty. When you understand your own feelings, your characters’ emotions ring true. A panic attack you write about today might turn into a storm scene tomorrow. A friendship fight could become your novel’s heart. Journalling gives you emotional truth — the kind readers recognise as real.
Not all feedback is created equal. Some feedback will be super helpful and will genuinely make your work shine, but other times, people might not understand your vision. That’s okay. If someone gives you feedback that doesn’t align with your goals or creative vision, feel free to politely let it go. You know your project best.
teens know when romance feels fake. We’ve grown up in a world of streaming dramas, TikTok ship edits, and books where every trope has been done ten times over. So if you want your romance to hit? It needs to feel real — or knowingly ridiculous.
Remember when you could take your time and let things simmer in your story? Yeah, that’s not a thing anymore. Today’s readers—especially the Gen Z crowd—are looking for a quick payoff. If you don’t hook them within the first couple of pages, you might lose them forever. That means your pacing needs to be relentless.
Even in a YA novel, the motivations don’t always need to be life-altering—sometimes they’re as simple as wanting to fit in or find a group where they belong. When readers see a character working towards something, they feel like they’re along for the journey, too.
